A new type of Internet connection will become available to EMU that will provide more flexibility in meeting future Internet connectivity needs. This new service will require some downtime for the Internet connection to EMU.

An outside consultant will assist with this operation. Coordination will be required with our current Internet provider, nTelos.

We anticipate that about an hour of interuption will be required, however, there may be lingering affects that will require up to several hours until the up-stream DNS servers learn of this new type of connection. However, no email message should be lost, only delayed.

Systems Affected include: Internet connection, email, off-campus access to web systems on-campus (i.e. Blackboard, Campus Web, WebMail). All on-campus access to these web systems will NOT be affected.

POSTPONED: The following procedure, originally scheduled for 12/16/03, will be postponed until January due to unavailability of services from our Internet supplier until then.

The EMU Internet connection will be switched from the current configuration of two DS1 lines that provide 3 megabits per second (mbps) capacity to a single ethernet connection of 4mbps. This new connection provides higher capacity (can be increased up to 10mbps) for a lower cost per megabit.

This change has been prompted by the project to implement Video TeleConferencing (VTC) which is being made possible by the LEAP Lilly grant for the seminary.

Network administrators will be working with consultants from STG of Winchester to make this conversion. It is estimated that about 1 hour of actual down-time will be required.

During the outage all access to the Internet will be disrupted. The email servers will remain operational but all incoming and outgoing mail will be held in various queues.

Persons outside EMU will NOT be able to get to the EMU web servers (EMU Home page, Blackboard, WebMail, WebCalendar).

There has been a failure of the FTP services on the FS server. The main effect of this is that faculty and staff will not be able to access the FS server from off-campus. IS is working on the problem but it may be Monday, 1/603 before it can be resolved.

Physical relocation of Internet Router Hardware. This is the final task in our project of adding a second T1 and changing Internet providers.
