Faculty/Staff (FS) Novell file server became unresponsive. Unusually high CPU utilization. Forced SHUTDOWN/REBOOT.
This incident appears to have been caused by an attempt to delete a corrupted Powerpoint file by a user. Network Administrator will have to delete this file immediately following a restart of FS at some point in the future. Until then the user has been instructed NOT to attempt to work with the file in any way.
FS Novell server rebooted because of reports of login processing failures last night.
Faculty/Staff Novell server failed to execute logins. Logs contain “work to be done” errors. Errors appear to have stopped after 19:55.

FS server crashed about 4:15 PM. Required restarting.
Beginning at 6:00am on Saturday, 3/29, Info Systems proposes to take all Novell servers off-line for some routine maintenance procedures and to test one, in particular, for possible hardware anomalies. All servers should be back on-line by noon unless the testing reveals problems that need correction.
Systems affected include all Novell file and print services and access to WebMail (the IMAP email server). The EMU web server and the Blackboard server will be unaffected.
Faculty/Staff Novell server experienced a hard failure on the SYSTEM drives. Both drives in the mirrored set failed. Various restart efforts attempted. Ultimately the SYSTEM disk had to be restored from the daily backups but numerous problems were encountered during the restore.
Dan Marple Jr directed the recovery effort beginning at 7:30am, 3/6. The server was returned to service about 5:00pm.
The server appears to be stable but a final assessment will be made first thing on Friday morning, 3/7. Faculty/Staff can once again use their network drives and printers by restarting their computers and logging in to Novell.
Info Systems is performing a major Novell server upgrade on Sat, 1/18/03. Work will begin shortly after 6am during which time the Novell servers will be unavailable. The outage could last to as late as 9pm, however, it is hoped that it can be completed before 5pm.
During the outage there will be no access to the Novell servers (i.e. network drives and printers). Users will also NOT be able to use email during the outage.
Status of the outage will be posted on the Critical Information Notice on the EMU home page throughout the day.
Major upgrade to Novell server software. Also affected will be the LDAP authentication supplied by our Novell servers so IMAP email will also be down. In general, most users should assume that all Network Services will be down on Saturday, 12/21. Even though mailbox access will be unavailable, no mail will be lost.
