The Calendar Server operating system was upgraded after 5:30pm yesterday (11/12). A configuration file was not set correctly causing connections to be dropped beginning about 7:45am today (11/13). The situation was corrected at 8:30am.
Calendar server operating system upgrade
The calendar server’s operating system was upgraded to ensure compliance with Oracle support’s requirements. Also, a firmware update for the disk subsystem was performed to ensure data integrity.
Webmail server unresponsive
The webmail server became unresponsive around 3pm. The mail server was unaffected, no mail was lost, and service was restored quickly.
1 Hour EMail Server Outage for Server Changes
Several hardware configuration changes are needed to simplify the way mail is handled and secured on the EMU email servers. These changes will require about 1 hour of down time and will begin at 6:30am.
During this time no one will be able to access email, however, and all incoming and outgoing email will be held in queue until the servers are all placed back on line.
Mail server outage
A software bug in a RAID controller manager created a misconfiguration of the server that resulted in downtime.
Email Server Issues
Users will not be able to login.
Blackboard Outage
An automatic backup procedure failed early this morning, causing the server to remain offline until it was brought back online manually.
Web server memory upgrade
Memory upgraded from 512MB to 1GB
NS server disk upgrade
The Novell server NS had larger disks installed.
The four 36 gig disks were replaced with four 73 gig disks. This meant the raid needed to be rebuilt. Since the data section was smaller than 100G, I was able to use server magic. Following is the order of what was done:
I created a tape backup of the server
Ccreated an image of the sys, c: partition.
Deleted most of the data from the data partition.
Created an image of the data partition.
Swapped out disks.
Created the new array and logical drives using server magic – which allows me to increase the size of the netware partition.
Installed both images.
Used Novastor to restore the data to the “SERVIMG” and “IMAGES” volumes.
(this created some problems when trying to restore data to more than 1 volume at a time.)
This now doubled the space to store system images.
