Info Systems is performing a major Novell server upgrade on Sat, 1/18/03. Work will begin shortly after 6am during which time the Novell servers will be unavailable. The outage could last to as late as 9pm, however, it is hoped that it can be completed before 5pm.
During the outage there will be no access to the Novell servers (i.e. network drives and printers). Users will also NOT be able to use email during the outage.
Status of the outage will be posted on the Critical Information Notice on the EMU home page throughout the day.
Weekly restart of Webmail Apache server(webmail.emu.edu) failed due to new config file entry. Only the Webmail server affected. Mail services from ms.mail.emu were unaffected.
WebMail experienced an outage of about 15 minutes. Users could not login to WebMail. Other IMAP services were unaffected. Network Admin made some config changes to get it working again. No clear explanation for the failure.
FS server was down for about 30 minutes after it abended again and wouldn’t go down gracefully. Vrepair was run on all volumes.
There has been a failure of the FTP services on the FS server. The main effect of this is that faculty and staff will not be able to access the FS server from off-campus. IS is working on the problem but it may be Monday, 1/603 before it can be resolved.
Major upgrade to Novell server software. Also affected will be the LDAP authentication supplied by our Novell servers so IMAP email will also be down. In general, most users should assume that all Network Services will be down on Saturday, 12/21. Even though mailbox access will be unavailable, no mail will be lost.
A system image will be made for catastrophe restoration purposes. This is a one-time process done periodically to insure a rapid return to service in the event of a catastrophic failure.

New webmail server installation. Webmail will be off-line during this time while a new server is put into service that provides web access to the EMU IMAP email server.
